A new year has begun and a new beginning awaits.

On that note, after years of fooling around with my old mac bought from the cempaka days, one has finally upgraded to a new and improved one.

Just came back from a (self proclaimed) well deserved and much needed holiday in China!

Population of city equivalent to the whole of Malaysia

Here's what I noticed...

(that I didn't like)

1. Everyone spits everywhere.

Every few seconds, you'd here someone going *ghaaaa pooooih*

One time I heard it, expecting to see a random chinese guy, but it was coming from a LADY dressed in a fancy coat, boots and a channel bag.

2. No one speaks english.

Seriously, no one.

At most 0.01% of the population.

Which was a slight problem for people who don't speak mandarin, like myself and the family, who were on holiday there for a week. I guess you can't blame em, they only started to allow people to come into the country in the 80's right?

Doesn't help that no one can tell that we're not chinese either.

I like watching their reaction when they realize that we're not.

3. Who needs rules on the road?

I thought Msia was something. People u-turn everywhere and anywhere.

Traffic lights? who needs em.

Pedestrian crossing? what are those?

4. Everyone bumps into everyone.

It's so normal here, u just bump into a stranger and not even look twice.

Common courtesy is not a strong part of their culture...

What I did like!

1. Supah dupah cheap stuff to buy

Well, considering the fact that everything in the world seems to be made in China, why wouldn't it be?

My style of haggling.

Takes the calculator, types out a number

followed by a cheesy smile and a thumbs up

Increase level of cheesiness in the smile.

Specially when my mom wanted to buy these bags, luckily the lady roughly spoke english.

His advice: Always ask for 70% less first. They make that much profit off of it.

Dad: You say don't pick us up now oso it won't make a difference.

3. Food = ho yeah

However due to the communication problem...

Gotta say though, from years of having chinese friends and randomly learning phrases from Pei Chan helped to a certain extent.

ching wen che suo chai na li= where is the toilet

and terms that i think is what they mean...

chi ke= that one

What's hua ren?

Needless to say we started to get the hang of it

Managed to have a proper conversation in mandarin with 2 ladies in a store telling them where we're from, who is jie jie who is ti ti and more hahaha

Parents got the hang of i too.

4. CHINESE ACROBATS FOR THE WIN!

We watched ERA II. Recently started, ERA was the original.

They do all kinds of insane things that make you have all sorts of expressions on your face.

AND THEY'RE ALL KIDS.

I wonder how training is like...

Well after all the miming and sign languages, it was nice to have Sherry!!

She's from shanghai.. hence she speaks mandarin THANK GOD.

Xmas dinner! Haha, try to spot the real chinese :P

I don't get it. You're studying music. You do it often. You sing so well...

then why do you get so nervous before you sing?

I'm sure you've heard the phrase...

music is what feelings sound like.

Well.. before telling someone how you feel.. how would you be like?

nervous? vulnerable?

Let alone to a whole audience filled with either strangers... friends... or family.

Also makes it harder when it's something important to you. If music wasn't important to me, why would I bother using years of my life to try and do something with it?

I mean I'm not stupid, this isn't the most stable thing in the world.

Everyone wants to be famous, everyone wants to be a singer a dancer a pop star

My goal isn't to make a platinum album

To be the next siti nurhaliza (someone say that to me again i will hurt you)

To be the star of an opera and tour around the world

I mean all those things would be cool if it happens along the way

but that's not my goal.

If I wanted to be a pop star, I would've joined every single singing reality tv show by now.

Music is a universal language that speaks to people.

Being one that over thinks everything + genuinely care about people too easily

When I sing

especially songs that mean something to me

I wanna make sure I express it the best way possible.

Example, for last weekend's xmas concert i sang

but still need help somehow

some people listen to music to help them get through difficult times.

bring back old forgotten but sweet memories

that makes them realize things

to deal with problems

keep them calm

make them smile

make them feel alive

aid a broken heart.

I'm sure a lot of people would be better at saving lives than me through surgery like all you future doctors..

argue their way to help others like all you future lawyers...

so I choose to help people in a way I know I can.

If I can move someone with my voice, If I can help someone feel better through music...

why not?

I might not be the best singer, composer, etc.

but I sure do love it enough to give it my all.

Care enough to study it so I can learn more, to be better

Have enough passion to take the insults, sarcastic comments, the snide looks and discrimination that people give me when they ask what I do

I like how facebook says we're talking about walkmans.

Those really were the great days.

We didn't just sit around in front of computers everyday. We went out and explored! Played in playgrounds, rode bikes, climbed over our neighbours fences...

Playing on the streets.

I remember every saturday all the kids in the neighbourhood would be out on the streets with their bikes and jump ropes. Playing games like "ice and water", "police and thieves." I learned how to ride my bike there, totally due to peer pressure.

*after many failed attempts at home, one fine saturday afternoon*

Hops on and prays for a miracle.

.... and it happened.

That was the first time I rode a bike.

Oh 90's. The days of the

This played on my ipod the other day when I put it on shuffle. Got me smiling like an idiot and eventually dancing and bobbing my head along swanston street.

You know what I love about being free?

Just having all the time in the world to walk around the city for hours without any specific reason or destination. Aimlessly wandering and roaming :P

No matter what time of the day or what day of the week, there will ALWAYS be something.

Streets of Melbourne bebeh. Baskers, performers, knick knacks, discoveries, riots, strikes and the list goes on.

You'd find the randomest things. Like...

A man in a bunny suit playing and electric guitar or something.

That was not a rhetorical statement.

I was on my way to VCA one day when there was a huge crowd at fed square.

One of those guys that juggle sticks of fire on a unicycle and what not was the star of the day.

A good entertainer make sures everyone gets included.

"Before I continue I just wanna say hello to my tennis coach over here!"

And he hugs a guy who looks like he just came from a run sitting nearby.

"And say hello to Melbournes worst skateboarder!"

What have we learned though?

Never judge someone just because the way they think is so different from the way you do

Needless to say the essay has yet to be completed. It's only due Friday

It hass been a while hasn't it. I feel like I forgot how to blog.

But I definitely remember how to talk about random things.

Long update startiiiiing....

I got my first job here in Melbourne and I absolutely love it.

Music teacher!
At a private primary school.

-[Dealing with children 101.]-

What have I learned?

1. Children are so freaking hyper.

The amount of energy that these kids have...

crazy.

Specially from the younger ones.

I'd be collecting them from their classes,
the moment I've collected everyone,

"Last one there's a rotten egg!"

And they'd run hysterically to class.

One of the groups of students I have.

Five 6 year olds.

ah my gawd.

The hyper group.

They'd be jumping around everywhere, climbing on tables, messing with the keyboards.

which is how I got my first rule of teaching

2. 'Bribery' goes a long way

It works.

They do get restless eventually.

3. They are smarter than you think

I remember when I was 5,

when I first met delima and co.

we planned a sleepover while we were in kindergarden and called our parents using the school's phone. All our teachers were going crazy

"Pandaiiiinyaaaa!! muda muda pun dah pandai plan sleepover!"
translation: so clever!! so young but they can still plan they're own sleepover!"

I remember getting annoyed thinking

we're not that young.
we're not stupid either.

lol. If 5 isn't young, I don't know what is.

But anyway my point

I didn't like being treated like a kid.

And when I say that, I mean

people always assume that kids don't know anything.

That is not true. They know more than we give them credit for.
So, I refused to treat my kids that way, especially the naughty ones.
It's the naughty ones that are really smart.

Because they know that they can get away with things being a kid and all, so they take advantage of that fact.

Example 1

I have a cheeky 6 year old student, who would purposely play the wrong notes. I wondered why for a second and realized, its just so that she can keep playing the same song and not learn a new (harder) one.

I looked at her and gave her a look and said

Me: we both know you can play this. so do it right.

She smiled cheekily, and yeap, played the song perfectly.

4. Talk to them like adults

The hyper group were at it again. And then one of them said to me

Fin : Why do you deal with annoying people? If we're always annoying you, why don't you just quit, than you won't need to deal with it.

Bear in mind, these are 6 year olds.

So I said to him,

Me: If all your teachers quit every time they deal with annoying students, you won't have any teachers at all.

He smiled.

Me: So I'm sticking around because I want to teach you and I want you to learn something from me."

They all looked at me for a moment.

Me: So, are you guys gonna be annoying

.... or are you going to help me?

*Drum roll please*

Erin: We'll help you.

And they all took their seats.

Best lesson I've ever had with them.

Well, that's why I hate it now when people who are only a few years older than me think they know soooooo much more/ wiser and assume we don't know shit. And if they use the term 'kid'on me. Fk weih. Piiiiiiii lah. Tolong ah beb, jangan nak over. Shows how wise you really are ;)

5. Talking to other teachers really helps!

Someone told me a friend of his, he's a teacher right, but he has a really thick chinese accent when he speaks english. So his students would be imitating him all the time.

Then one time he turned to them and said

"If you're gonna do it, at least do it right."

They all burst out laughing, but oddly enough, they never made fun of him after that.

Good one.

6. Children are still adorable.

Now I understand why parents constantly talk about their kids as if there's nothing else to talk about. They do the cutest things.

Arabella: Miss Diyanah I wrote you a song!!

Adrian: Miss Diyanah, I always miss you after my lesson.
